The Essence of Self Realization
The highest goal of spiritual pursuit is self realization. Today its being talked about in a nonchalant way ,but to attain self realization is to know what it truly means to be spiritual.Over the ages this is one attainment that all seekers have sought to achieve, for there is no scope of upliftment in any sphere of activity without this . What does self-realization mean? If you refer to literature you will get definitions that are apparently different, but in reality, are not. Let us try to define this state of being in simple language. Self-realization is the process whereby one tries to understand herself (or himself) at the deepest core of existence without qualifying this understanding with materialistic values. Once you attain to this ,you are anyways beyond materialism. That means, for a moment, assume that you have no possession or in this world or attachment with anyone,in a word this state is defined as vairagya, you try to evaluate yourself. When you realize that your very existence is temporary and transitory you will then understand what life truly means. The earlier you get this experience the better it is for you since you will then not only look at things differently, but your experience of life and day to day living will have broken free from the strait jacket of past conditioning.
In essence you attain an entirely new and much better perspective of life, which is as close to the truth as it possibly can be. You will realize that what keeps us going is the energy that is generated within us,that the whole cosmos is one energy, and you are but a tiny part of this immensity. Positive energy begets positive feelings and negative energy gives rise to depression, anger, anxiety, fear and other negative feelings. When you stand beyond positive and negative, good and bad, like and dislike, that’s when you are taking quantum steps towards self realization
It is said that once we are able to disentangle ourselves from the clutches of materialism, we will be reborn spiritually into a very different world and existence, where the folly of competition for wealth and fame would be apparent. However, this is easier said than done, because we are living in a world that is beautiful, but also corrupted by hate, jealousy and social stigma. This is because our whole state of being is oriented through the five senses. When a child opens his eyes for the first time it feels everything is out there, this continues and is concertized as we grow older. Breaking this outward bound mould and turning within is what the whole journey of self realization is about. If we keep looking outside for spiritual growth it’s a long and arduous journey, all you have to do is turn around and look within. This is not very easy
because it’s a step into the unknown, therefore it’s a journey best taken under guidance of a self realized being, who’s been down the path and can hand hold you around the pitfalls, otherwise this seemingly simple step of turning around and looking within may be the most arduous one.
When we go into the state of self-realization, we will ask ourselves a lot of questions, the most important being, “Who am I and why have I come into this world?” Also, we start thinking of the purpose of life. When we strive to get answers to these questions we lift ourself into a higher plane.
