As someone said,

"You are what you think", and thoughts being generated in the mind, it's very important that a human beings mental balance is at optimum level at all times. If there is a slightest descripency in the mental well being of a person, then everything might start going haywire , because when your very thoughts have turned against you, what else can save you?…It's true that the human brain is made up of a mixture of chemicals, that has to be perfectly maintained because even the slightest variation in these chemicals can lead to many mental sicknesses that can be a huge disruption in a person's life. The value of having complete mental balance can not be over stated.

If we look for the definition of human beings, in a dictionary, or Wikipedia, we'll find the following answer. Human being, a culture-bearing primate classified in the genus Homo, especially the species Homo sapiens. Human beings are anatomically similar and related to the great apes but are distinguished by a more highly developed brain and a resultant capacity for articulate speech and abstract reasoning. So what differentiates human beings, from other living beings? Much more developed mental capabilities, reasoning, planning, problem solving, thinking abstractly, comprehension and so on. But do we understand, the importance of mental well-being? First of all, what do you understand by the term, mental wellness?

What is mental wellness?

Well mental wellness is a condition in which one’s mental health is in a positive state. It also means that your general mental condition is good. It is very important for us to constantly aim to sustain ourselves in this condition.

Why is mental health so important?

Mental health is important because it will enable us to think positively. Being of sound mental health also means the ability to reduce stress and cope with challenges that might confront us with ability and ease. It will mean that we want to engage in productive endeavours that will create good to ourselves and society. Investing time and effort in mental wellness results in a very healthy mind and optimistic outlook.

How do we achieve mental wellness?

Let us first understand and accept the fact that we love ourselves and that we have to make efforts to improve our mental state and attitude. There is nothing wrong in being proud of who we are and nurturing our self-esteem. This is the first step, but a giant one nevertheless, in our pursuit of mental wellness. We can also practise the following.

*Taking care of our health. This is very important, because without a healthy disposition, mental health cannot be positive. This would mean having regular and healthy eating habits, abstaining from alcohol consumption and smoking, apart from other precautions for regular health.

* Accepting ourselvess as we are. This will give us mental peace. There are certain things about ourselves that we can change and others that we cannot. Let us accept this reality. Life will be much easier.

*Devoting time to fulfil our needs and desires. This will help us to rediscover our importance and nurture our self-esteem.

*Spending time in the company of people who have made a mark for themselves. It is said that we develop best when in the company of people who are more competent and successful than we are. This is because we learn a lot and gain from such associations.

*Sleeping and waking up early will keep us healthy. This will also enable us to complete our jobs for the day in a timely and efficient manner.

It is time we started looking after ourselves. Let us take steps to be at peace mentally. It will help us in whatever we do and make a difference in our physical and social well-being.
